In Ayurvedic tradition, Hasta Abhyanga (special Indian hand massage) has long been used to alleviate pains.
This massage done by specially prepared medicinal oil. The person who is taking the massage is given a loincloth and full body massage is done.
Range of repeated hand movements with the knowledge of vital points in the body is used from head to toe to harmonize and relax the entire body. Particular Marma points (energy centres) of the hands and arms are stimulated during the massage. From a psycho-somatic perspective, the energy blocks in the body tend to release with enough pressure in the hands and with specific movements. It cleanses the body totally, regains the active mind to its best possible working level, giving a feeling of rejuvenation. One may easily surrender oneself to the exotic divinity of the treatment.
The hand is thought to be a microcosm of the chakra system.

Shuba is a trained Kalaripayattu practitioner from Kalarigram and a disciple of Lakshman Gurukkal. She has been trained to give Ayurvedic hand massages and other treatments in the course of her learning the martial art at kalarigram. A recipient of the Attakalari TET award 2016, Shuba is passionate about performing arts and body science.
